For a residential driveway, natural stone pavers must be a minimum of 30mm thick if laid on a reinforced concrete base. If you are laying the pavers on a flexible base (crushed rock and sand), you must use cobblestones or pavers that are at least 40mm to 50mm thick to withstand the weight of vehicles without cracking.
Base Type vs. Minimum Thickness
The foundation dictates the thickness of the stone required:

Concrete Slab Base (Recommended): Provides maximum rigidity. 30mm pavers bedded in strong mortar are sufficient for standard residential cars.

Flexible Base (Crushed rock & sand): Subject to minor ground movement. Requires thicker stones (40mm+) to prevent point-load cracking.
Pro Tip for Driveways
Always ensure you use a high-quality bonding agent (slurry coat) on the back of the pavers before laying them on mortar to prevent them from popping loose under tire friction.
